SAN MATEO AND SURROUNDINGS
Vega de San Mateo is a beautiful small town located in the center of the island of Gran Canaria, at a considerable altitude above sea level. This location provides a cooler climate compared to the coastal areas of the island. The landscape of Vega de San Mateo is mountainous and picturesque. The area is surrounded by hills and valleys, with lush vegetation that includes pine forests and other native trees. This natural environment makes it an attractive place for those who enjoy outdoor activities and contact with nature. Agricultural terraces stretch across the hillsides, where products such as potatoes, cereals and fruits are grown. It is an ideal destination for those looking to escape the busiest tourist areas and enjoy the authenticity of life on the island of Gran Canaria. Not far from San Mateo, and equally close to our Finca, is the town of Santa Brígida, which is home to several very good restaurants and a weekend farmers market, with a strong focus on organic products.

THE OLD TOWN OF SAN MATEO
The old town of San Mateo features traditional Canarian architecture, with cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses with traditional wooden balconies.
THE BARRANCO MINA
This ravine begins in San Mateo and is an interesting offer for practicing nature activities such as hiking (see the routes and trails section). It is a ravine through which water flows all year round and preserves vestiges of laurel forest vegetation and old water mills.THE BARRANCO
THE CHURCK OF SAN MATEO
The church of San Mateo, located on Main Street, is an important landmark in the center of town. It is a building with two naves, whose upper central part is crowned by a body of bells, designed by José Luján Pérez.
THE ALAMEDA DE SANTA ANA
Located next to the church, was built in 1943. It currently forms, together with it and the Town Hall, a very refined Neo-Canarian style complex.
THE SAN MATEO AGRICULTURAL AND CRAFT MARKET
The San Mateo agricultural and craft market: this traditional agricultural market demonstrates the importance of agricultural activity in the area. Locals and visitors stroll by to purchase fresh vegetables, fruits, etc. The cheeses and wines are also excellent, their great quality giving prestige to the municipality’s wineries. In this same market it is possible to appreciate the municipality’s crafts. Among the craft activities carried out are wicker basket weaving, the making of knives, and leather and wood working.
And if you feel like it, then join the locals outside of the market hall for a glass of wine or the not so young couples for a dance to local music.
The market opens on weekends.

SAN MATEO EQUESTRIAN CENTER
San Mateo Equestrian Center: this center is located a few kilometers from Finca Sabai and offers horseback riding excursions. It is a very beautiful place surrounded by mountains and ravines. You can also take horse riding classes there.
